Spies and Guys – a Joe Besser comedy short, with Angela Stevens & Murray Alper, set in the Army, with a few funny moments, but mostly falls flat.
Spies and Guys (1953) starring Joe Besser, Angela Stevens, Murray Alper
Many people consider Joe Besser to be the least funny of the Three Stooges. Sadly, Spies and Guys won’t do much to change their opinion. It’s also a Columbia comedy short, and it does have some funny moments. However, much of the comedy is seen coming a mile away, and loses much of its’ impact.
Private Joe Besser keeps unintentionally assaulting his sergeant, and is sweet on the beautiful Lt. Morey. She, for absolutely no reason, picks him (and the sergeant) to go on an undercover mission behind enemy lines, to capture enemy soldiers for interrogation.
Comedy bits
- Joe repeatedly, unintentionally, assaulting his sergeant.
- Fighting with his bed in his prison cell
- Angela Stevens revealing her swimsuit, causing the enemy soldiers to walk after her, whistling, while Joe knocks out the last soldier in line repeatedly. Imitating a similar scene in Fiddler’s Three (1948)
- A similar bit, with her attracting enemy soldiers one at a time, pouring hot coals down their pants (!) so Joe can knock them out. Ending with Joe unintentionally getting hot coals down his pants.
