Goof on the Roof (1953) starring the Three Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Shemp Howard)

The Stooges learn that their pal Bill has gotten married. So they decide to set-up his new antenna and television set as a present before moving out. In the process, they manage to thoroughly wreck his house! No good deed goes unpunished …

Goof on the Roof is a funny, fast-paced Three Stooges short. There’s a lot of slapstick, and a lot of verbal comedy as well. A decent Shemp-era comedy.

Comedy highlights

  • Shemp repeatedly finding himself “drowning” in a bucket of water
  • Shemp repeatedly falling over the half door
  • Larry “logically” making multiple holes in the wall, to recover the lost TV knob.
  • Moe, Larry, and Shemp trying to put out the fire in the wall.
  • Moe nearly electricuting himself trying to fix the wall’s power outlet.
  • Shemp dissembling the new television set to retrieve the ring that his girlfriend gave him … from a box of crackerjacks.
  • Shemp “installing” the TV aerial on the roof.

Funny movie quotes for Goof on the Roof

[after Moe shoves the door into Shemp]
Shemp: [to Moe] Hey, why don’t you watch where you’re going?
Moe: [to Shemp] Relax. I give you a hand as soon as I finish eating this jelly sandwich. I can’t work on an empty stomach.
Shemp: I’m hungry too and I haven’t…
Moe: Shaddup and finish your job.

[Larry has slammed the top door in Moe’s face]
Larry: [to Moe] I didn’t know you were standing there, Moe. I wouldn’t have slammed the door.
Moe: [to Larry] Oh, you slammed it? That’s all right. Hey, is that a spot?
Larry: Where?
Moe: Here! [slams door in Larry’s face]

Larry: I either need a longer arm or a shorter wall. [shrugs] Shorter wall. [starts knocking holes in the wall]

Moe: How do you like that? No more jelly. I guess I’ll have to eat cheese. Better get some bread. [Shemp throws a cake of soap, that lands on the table, that Moe mistakes for cheese]

Bill: [Bill and his new bride Rosebud arrive at the house] Well, Rosebud, here we are. Our new love nest. In we go.
Rosebud: But, Bill, darling, a bride never crosses through her new threshold by herself.
Bill: You’re right, little dumpling.
[Bill hops onto Rosebud’s arms and she carries him across the threshold]

Rosebud: [after seeing the messy house she and Bill are living in] Why, I wouldn’t live in this rat nest! [Drops Bill onto the floor]
Bill: But baby!
