HOLLYWOOD ON PARADE #B9 featuring Ted Healy and his Stooges

Hollywood on Parade # B-9 (March 30, 1934) – a hodgepodge of a variety of Hollywood stars of the time, on a set pretending to be a speakeasy – including Ted Healy and his Stooges in a short bit, as well as Rudy Vallee, Jimmy Durante, Ben Turpin, and many others.

Ted Healy and his Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Curly Howard) with Bonnie Bonnell are only onscreen for just over a minute …. But the short itself if only 9 minutes long. The routine deals with Ted Healy coming up to the bar and ordering a beer from bartender Ben Turpin. Then Bonnie Bonnell walks up and asks if he’s “Ted Heel”. Then, she tries to demonstrate what makes him funny — by giving him a slap.

“That’s not right,” says Larry, who proceeds to demonstrate by slapping Moe. Who, in turn, tries to demonstrate the “correct” technique by slapping Curly. And Ted shows them all by doing a triple slap, and walking away.

Other routines

Frankly, there’s a lot of other things stuffed into this 9 minute short film. Jimmy Durante has to see a man about a dog, Rudy Vallee and Mack Gordon sing, and quite a few others show up, sometimes for only a few seconds. I do enjoy Ben Turpin serving a pair of “small” beers at the end of the short.
